According to Boardsource.org, there are six core competencies that every nonprofit executive must have.
- Planning– strategy creation, together with the board.
- Fundraising–leads fundraising, together with the board.
- Administration–the CEO is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization and works with his team to create and manage strategy and systems that ensure effective operation.
- Board relations–the board supervises the CEO. He or she together with the board provides leadership for the organization.
- Communications and public relations. The CEO is the spokesperson and face of the organization and works to build relationships with key stakeholders outside the organization to facilitate the accomplishment of the organization’s goals.
- Financial management–the CEO must make sure that the organization’s resources are properly managed. To do so, he or she must 1) institute excellent budgeting and accounting practices and systems, 2) put in place good financial controls, and 3) protect the organization’s assets through appropriate risk-management strategies.
