I recently listened to the audio book of Michael Bungay Stanier’s book, The Coaching Habit: Say Less, Ask More & Change the Way You Lead Forever. I think it’s one of the best coaching books I’ve read. And it’s a very easy read. I recommend it.
In it, he shares the following 7 questions that he argues are all a busy manager needs to radically transform their coaching. He promises that the questions can help managers coach employees in 10 minutes or less.
Here they are:
- What’s on your mind?
- And what else?
- What’s the real challenge here for you?
- What do you want
- How can I help?
- If you’re saying yes to this, what are you saying no to?
- What was most useful for you?
The author proposes going chronologically through these questions allows you to actually help the employee being coached to come up with their own solutions to the their problem without rushing in to start giving them advice.
I think his questions are excellent. If you want to learn more, visit Amazon and get his book.
