The following is for those of you in my audience who are Christians and who are unsure of the question of tithing today.
Dr. Thomas R. Schreiner is the James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation and Professor of Biblical Theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary where he also serves as associate dean of the School of Theology.
In the following video, Dr. Schreiner explains that tithing (giving 10%) is not required of Christians today. That was an old covenant requirement tied to temple sacrifices and Levitical service. What is required today, he says, is sacrificial giving.
Note that not being under the law but not under grace is not a license to sin. Having no law that used to require ten percent giving taken away from us gives us the freedom to give from the heart and the opportunity to give generously what we want when we want.
