When you are trying to change a bad behavior, learn the discipline needed to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle, or remain in recovery, self-care and self-awareness are crucial. You are more vulnerable to relapse or backslide when you are:
- Hungry
- Angry, anxious, or stressed out.
- Lonely
- Tired
When you are experiencing any of these things, you need to HALT and be cautious because you are more likely to make a bad move that you will regret later. The mnemonic HALT stands for the above four things that we must watch out for and address immediately. When you have any of them, you have to HALT and take care of it, otherwise, you might falter and do what you don’t want to do.
If you are hungry, get something to eat. If you are angry, calm yourself down, if you are lonely reach out to someone to socialize with, if you are tired, get some rest. Prioritize these things so that they don’t cause you to make poor choices.
Notice that the four things are represented by the mnemonic HALT.
