The Bible is a Revelation of Jesus Christ.

As you begin to study the Bible, it is important to know the purpose of the Bible. The Bible is an anthology of 66 books, written by about 40 different authors over a period of about 1500 years. But the central feature, the theme of each of them and of the whole anthology we call the Bible today is the revelation of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the subject of the entire Bible. God the father is the object and Jesus reveals the father to us through the scriptures. We cannot know the father by looking for him directly in the Bible. No, we look for Jesus and when we know Jesus, we will know the father. Here are some scriptures that throw more light.Jesus speaking of the scriptures said and did the following:

“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me” John 5:39 NIV

“Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” Luke 24:44 NIV

“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” Luke 24:27 NIV

And Jesus had the following discussion with one of his disciples, Philip, in the presence of other disciples.

“‘If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.’ Philip *said to Him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.’  Jesus *said to him, ‘Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works.  Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves.  Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.  Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.” John 14: 7-14 NASB.

It is absolutely crucial that you have a proper understanding of what the subject and purpose of the Bible is. Both are the same: To reveal Jesus Christ to us. Through Jesus we know both the father and who we are in Christ. That is crucial. In John 5:39 cited above, the Jews diligently studied the scriptures. But they rejected Jesus. Here again is what Jesus said to them: “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.” Why did they refuse Jesus? They studied the scriptures because they wanted to find eternal life. Jesus said it. The Bible defines eternal life for us in John 17:3 It says, “this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” Even though the Jews sought eternal life and diligently studied the Bible to find it, they missed it because they failed to see Jesus in them. They failed to see the subject of the scriptures they were studying.

If you are a Christian, you already have eternal life as a gift from God. But if you fail to see Jesus in the scriptures that you study you will miss the revelation of the word of God that you need to feed your soul. Like the Jews, you would work hard and gain very little unless you focus on Jesus.

In Luke 24:44, 27 and John 14 cited above, Jesus clearly shows that the entire old testament of the Bible was about him. The law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms covers the entire old testament.

When you open any book of the Bible, you should be reading and asking, Father, show me, “Where is Jesus in this book of the Bible?” Ask this question for every passage you read and you will have a fresh revelation and understanding of the Word of God.
